Home improvements, cryptocurrency among riskiest scams of 2022: Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau is issuing a new warning about the latest tricks scammers are using to take advantage of people, with home repairs and cryptocurrency topping the list.

According to the most recent BBB Scamtracker Canadian Risk Report, home improvement scams became the riskiest scam type reported by Canadians in 2022, up from the fourth in 2021.

When identifying risk factors, the bureau takes a combination of exposure, susceptibility and overall money lost.

6.2 per cent of all scams reported to the bureau in 2022 were related to home improvement, with an average of $1,900 lost.

The Richmond Home + Garden Show continues Sunday

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Do-it-yourselfers, contractors and other folks interested in the latest home improvement and garden design ideas attended the Richmond Home + Garden Show at Richmond Raceway Complex this weekend.

More than 200 home improvement, landscape design and gardening experts are on hand at the event.

The shows also feature gardens created by Ashland Berry Farm and Schultz Lawnscapes. In addition, there is a garden market offering a host of plants and flowers just in time for spring.

Lowe’s Stock Retreats As Mixed Q4 Results Offer Weak Guidance, Slow Traffic Outlook

Home improvement retailer Lowe’s (LOW) reported its fourth-quarter results Wednesday morning following mixed results from rivals HomeDepot (HD) last week. Lowe’s stock retreated early Wednesday after inching up in premarket trading.

Lowe’s earnings accelerated for the third quarter in a row, jumping 28% to $2.28 per share as revenue rose 5.2% to $22.445 billion. The adjusted earnings results excluded pretax transaction costs associated with selling its Canadian retail business, after offloading it to private-equity firm Sycamore Partners for $400 million in cash in November.

The FactSet consensus projected a 24% earnings increase to $2.21 per share on 6.4% revenue
